IBM believes Linux on the enterprise desktop finally ready for widespread adoption. To meet future demand it is preparing to deliver its next versions of Lotus Notes enterprise collaboration software and Lotus Symphony office productivity applications for the first time with full support for Ubuntu Linux 7.0.
The roll out will occur sometime in the second half of this year.

IBM has increased support for Linux with the introduction of versions of its Lotus Notes collaboration suite and Symphony productivity tools built to run on the open source OS — and it’s hoping the effort will help unseat Microsoft as the king of desktop software.
The company this week said it plans to ship what it calls its “Open Collaboration Client,” made up of Lotus Notes 8 and Symphony, for Canonical’s popular Ubuntu Linux distribution.
Lotus Notes 8 includes e-mail, calendaring, and contact management modules, while Symphony — available as a free download — features word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications build on the open source OpenOffice.org standard.

Say, you’re a software developer. Say, you want to write an easy-to-install program for any Linux distribution. I’d say, “You have a problem.” OpenSUSE, however, has improved upon its solution for this problem: the openSUSE Build Service, which now supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS.
The problem, in more detail, is that, despite such standardization efforts as the LSB (Linux Standard Base) and Portland Project, unless you expect users to compile their own programs from source-code, it’s not easy to create programs that will install and run on every popular Linux variation.

The LiMo Foundation has added some members to its ranks as competition among new mobile Linux platforms heats up. ADVERTISEMENT
LiMo plans to announce on Monday new members, including Trolltech, Acrodea, ETRI, Huawei, and Purple Labs. The group, including founders NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone, and Motorola, now consists of 25 members.

Sun Microsystems on Wednesday will release details of a new award program meant to spur growth and activity within the company’s open-source efforts, according to a post by Sun’s open-source officer, Simon Phipps, on his corporate blog.
“We will confirm the first nutrient exchange and to attend with the integration, interrupted to work out the approach which attends is better,” Phipps wrote.

A top Red Hat executive has accused arch-rival Novell of reselling a beta version of the company’s open source code.
The dispute concerns Novell’s SuSE Linux Enterprise Real Time 10 (SLERT 10), which Novell released last week Over a yield administer in sellers Wall Street and other organisations which require performance in real time. The software in real time can carry operations within the warranted cycle, something required for the certain industry and to operate some aspects of an electronic instrumentation.
